Namibians wearing Vellies (Shoes)

“Velskoen, pronounced “fell-skoon” and known colloquially as “vellies,” are the ancestor of the modern-day desert boot. Vellies were first made in the 1600s, inspired by the footwear of the Khoikhoi tribe and crafted using raw materials. Later, our vellies were adapted by British travellers, packaged and renamed to be what we now know as desert boots.

(Brother Vellies) are made in the coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia. There, a small group of eight Damara gentlemen assemble every shoe by hand, turning out just 20 pairs an afternoon.

…Vellies are made of vegetable-dyed Kudu leather. The Namibian government mandates the culling of these large native antelope to control their population. Kudu skin yields amazingly durable leather and suede that ages exceptionally well. Because these hides are taken from wild animals they often show scars or other “imperfections” that domesticated hides do not.”

Define Desirability: Newness:

Newness

Newness can be a very powerful “desirability factor”. There is an energy and excitement in the discovery of something new, and is why people love to “window shop” or “pinterest”. It does not even have to be new to everyone, it just has to be new for you.

The newness can take shape in various ways, it could be a new colour, look or sensorial experience, it could be a new function or way of doing things or it could be a new idea or concept. Whether the newness is a very familiar thing reinvented (my particular favourite newness like the espresso machine above), or something never seen before and unprecedented, the thrill of the new never ceases to strike a chord with my sense of desire.

On either side of the road, were placed sponge cushions soaked in green, environmentally friendly paint. As pedestrians walked towards the crossing, they stepped on the green sponge, thus leaving green foot imprints on the canvas of the tree.

Making City is the theme of the 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR). It showcases the potential and opportunity of cities in the face of urbanisation and it’s many global economic, social en ecologic issues.

Gispen organised a tour zigzaggin’ past interesting locations in Rotterdam like the 18th floor of Hofpoort, an Observatorium, a bubble building site and a pop-up Urban Wasteland terrace.

The tour ended, while passing real life sheep and design sheep from ZUS, at The Barn. Which is Gispen’s own new project in collaboration with designer Mara Skujeniece. It symbolises a new way of working combined with a traditional barn setting.

IABR hosts a full program of interesting expositions, debates, tours etc., also during summertime.

The Pringles can is a design failure. When you put your whole hand in it you only get three chips out in it’s entirely. When you shake the chips into the beginning of the tube you’re taking a risk at receiving a chippy lap dance.

The Bloom Chips can solves these problems. The can, that won a RedDot Design Award, unfolds like a flower in the morning sun when the paper sleeve comes off, creating a serving bowl.

Valve a game and software developer doesn’t believe in hierarchy. This week we’ve gotten a glimpse inside of the company thanks to a leaked ‘Handbook for new employees’.

Authenticity aside, the 56-page handbook is worth a read. Not only is it full of fantastic illustrations and step-by-step guides on things like how to take company vacations, but it’s also got a brief company timeline for the uninitiated and details on how Valve itself is run. In terms of corporate hierarchy, there isn’t any. The handbook calls it “flatland” — that means there are no managers and that “this company is yours to steer.”
